The Exposed Oil Pipeline Shutdown and Temperature Drop Affected by Thermal Insulators

Abstract:The hot oil pipeline shutdown can’t be avoided during its transportation, in the absence of soil’s thermal effect, the thermal insulators played a vital role on the process of pipeline shutdown. This paper based on the actual situation of the exposed oil pipeline, established a physical model of pipeline’s shutdown temperature field, Using the CFD software respectively simulate the temperature field before and after the fail of the thermal insulators. Simulation results show that the temperature change rate become far greater after the fail of the thermal insulators, and the Safety Shutdown time reduced by the 9 days to 7 hours. The results provide theoretical guidance for the pipeline’s safety shutdown and maintenance.
